, ind. [ts.], 1. prefix to verbs and nouns (beforevowels mostly abbh°), giving an additional sense = to,
towards; over (and thus in some cases synon, with ati
(q. v.), or adhi (q. v.; see also ajjhohāra, adhippāya,
where sa. abhi in pāli is replaced by adhi, cf. Franke,
Pāli-Gramm. u. Lex., p. 84)); (a) to verbs and their
abhiin abhi-jānāti, abhi-gijjhati, etc), or giving an intr.verb
a trans, meaning (as in abhi-nandati, abhi-nisīdati,
abbhukkirati, abbhokirati. etc), and thus frequent
in paron., see abhikīḷati, °-gīta, °-nikkhamati, °-rat-
ta, °-ravati, °-vandati, °-saṁkharoti, °-sambuddha;
similarly combined with several other prefixes (some-
times nearly superfluous): abhi + ati° (see abbh-ati-
kkanta, etc.); abhi + anu° (see abbh-anumodati); abhi
+ ava° (abbh-okirati); abhi + ā° (abbh-ācikkhati,
etc.); abhi + ud° (abbh-ukkirati, etc.); abhi + ni° (abhi-
niggaṇhāti, etc); abhi + nī° (in most cases abhi-ni°
before double cons.; abhi-nikkhamati, etc.); abhi +
(p)pa° (abhi-ppakirati, etc.); abhi + (p)pa + ā° (see
abhi-pāruta); abhi + vi° (abhi-vijayati, etc; abhi-
vyāpeti); — (b) to nouns, expressing superiority or
intensity, e. g. abbh-adhika, abbh-antara, abbh-uṇha,
abhi-dhamma (in native exegesis; but see (c)), abhi-
maṅgala, abhi-rāja(n), abhi-vinaya (in nat. exeg.)
and (with a nuance of sympathy or esthetical appre-
ciation): abhi-nava, °-nalāṭa, °-nīla, °-yobbana, °-rat-
ta, °-rūpa; — (c) towards, concerning; in the adv.
cpd.s (abhikkhaṇaṁ), abhi-dakkhiṇaṁ, abhi-dantaṁ,
abhi-dassanaṁ, abhi-dhamme, abhi-vinaye, abhisaññā
(nirodha) below and prob, abbhokāse above; — accord-
