or āmeḍita [sa. āmreḍita, prob, from
*ā-mriṭṭa < āvṛtta, "repeated", Tedesco, JAOS
73 p. 82 foll., Mayrhofer Etym. s. v. mreḍ], mfn. re-
peated; n. repeated utterance or exclamation, repetition;
saying anything two or three times over or in two ways;

~aṁ tu vijjeyyaṁ dvattikkhattum udīraṇaṁ, Abh
106; — applied as a stylistic term to an exclamation
(concerning the same subject) uttered twice or more
under the stress of an emotion, especially in the cases

enumerated in the kārikā "1bhaye 2kodhe 3pasaṁsāyaṁ
4turite 5kotūhal' 6acchare 7hāse 8soke 9pasāde ca kare
āmeṇḍitaṁ budho", quoted Abh 107, Sadd 40,28*, Sp
I 70,25* (ad Vin III 6,4), Sv 228,12* (ad D I 85,7), Mp
II 105,26* (ad A I 56,2), Pj II 155,12* (ad Sn 82); the
ca of the kārikā is interpreted (see Sadd 40,29) as an
indication of occurrences not covered by the nine cases
enumerated; in fact, the term is at various places said to
indicate the following connotations
(apart from, in some
cases perhaps also covered by those of the
atisaya (Sp 622,18), asammāna (Sadd 40,29), ādara (e.g.
Ud-a 173,6), thira-karaṇa (Spk I 44,5), daḷhakamma
(Ja IV 183,14'), sambhama (Sp 1149,17, so read); ~
is a term occurring in the cts. attributed to Buddhaghosa
and Dhammapāla; it does not belong to the terminology
Kaccāyana or Moggallāna; Mogg simply uses the
dve to indicate the cases described elsewhere under
the heading of
~ as well as other cases of repetition
(see Mogg I 54, 56, 57; Pay ad 157 "yāva-bodhaṁ
sambhame" has ~ with quotation of the kārikā "bhaye
kodhe . . ."); Subodh 87—88 mentions the cases else-
where given under
~ as such to which the dosa of
ekattha (tautology) does not apply; — abalabalo viyā
ti abalo kira bondo vuccati, atisayatthe ca idaṁ ~aṁ,
tasmā atibondo viyā ti vuttaṁ hoti, Sp 622,18 (ad
Vin III 181,6); sambhama-attha-vasena c'ettha ~aṁ

Ee in the text; cf.
