Aṅguttara-nikāya

, m., title of the fourth division
(the 'add-one' division) of the Sutta-piṭaka; as the
name indicates, the numerical system commands its
subdivision, cf. the
Ekuttaraka, Vin V 115-141, the
Saṅgīti- and Dasuttara-suttanta, DN III 207-71,
272-93 (see also AN V p. VII); it comprises 11 books
(nipātā: Eka-°, Duka-°, etc.) or 169 sections (vaggā)
containing about 2344 chapters (suttāni, suttantā);
this is at variance with the old tradition, which says
that the whole work contains 9557 suttas:
Sp I 27,20*;
As 25,29-30*; AN V 361,10-ii*; Sv I 23,21-22* (cf. ib.
17,9); Mp I 3,8-9*; Pj I 12,6; Gv 56,29-3i*; — it is
also quoted under the name
Ekuttara-nikāya, Mil
362,17, or Ekuttarika-n° (cf. Vyu 65,97) Mil 392,2,
or only Ekuttarika, As 1.5,26; Ekuttariya, As 9,27;
