atriccha

, mfn., wishing too much, exceedingly
covetous, greedy;
Ja III 206,10; IV 5,17'; Vibh-a 472,6.
Etymology (as well of atricchatā, and of atricchā)
uncertain; all these words seem to originate with phrases
like
atricchaṁ cakkam āsado, Ja I 414,6* (= atra
1atriccha= III 207,15* = IV 4,23* (Ed. here following B-mss.
atriccho; Ct.: atricchatāya samannāgatattā atriccho
[Cks atricchā, see Ja II 231,1*] . . . atr' icchan ti pi
pāṭho, atra atra icchamāno ti attho; atricchā ti pi
pāṭho, atricchāyā ti attho), quoted Vibh-a 472,4*;
we prefer to take atricchaṁ as part. m. sg. of *atric-
chati or aticchati (q. v., cf. aticchatā, f.), /. e. ati +
icchati, cf. Amg (sam)aïcchaï; but icchati may repre-
sent sa.
icchati and īpsati, and ṛcchati as well; cf.
yadicchā (sa. yadṛcchā) and atricchatā.
Rem. As to the duplicate aticchatā, atricchatā
cf. mṭ ad Vibh-a 470,12 foll.: aticca icchatī ti
aticc'-iccho, tassa bhāvo aticc'-icchata ti vattabbe
cci-kāra-lopaṁ katvā aticchatā ti vuttaṁ; . . .
atricchatā ti ca sā eva vuccatī ti, tatrâ pi
neruttika-vidhānena padasiddhi veditabbā. Thus
atricch° could be approximative sa. aty-ṛcch° or
even
a-tṛps° (√tṛp, see PED s. v. atricchā), if at
any rate
*atṛpsu, *atṛpsā could be proved to signify
'insatiable, insatiability'.
