Issara-samaṇaka

, m. (1issara + samaṇa +
stiff, -ka), the Issara-samaṇa-vihāra or ārāma at
Anurādhapura (Ceylon); usually identified with
Isurumuniya north of Vessagiriya along Kurunăgala
road
(about a mile south of the Mahāvihāra); according
to
C. W. Nicholas, JRAS Ceylon, NS VI (1963),
p. 148 modern Vessagiriya. It was founded by Devā-
nampiya Tissa
(247—207 BC.) at the place where
500 disciples under prince Ariṭṭha dwelt after their
conversion by Mahinda; see further
